Many shoppers find that their supermarket basil plants wither and die within weeks of purchase, but the cause of this common problem often begins well before the plant enters their home. Typically, the lush basil pots sold in stores are densely packed with numerous young plants. While this dense arrangement gives the basil a fuller look, it also results in seedlings competing for essential resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately weakening the plant.
To extend the lifespan of supermarket basil, a simple method can be employed: separating and replanting the basil into smaller groups. Begin by carefully removing the plant from its container and gently dividing the roots into three or four sections, ensuring as many roots remain intact as possible. Each section should then be placed into its own pot filled with fresh compost, watered thoroughly, and positioned in a warm, bright spot.
In addition to providing more room for growth, regularly trimming the tops of the basil is advised as it encourages bushier growth and helps delay premature flowering. This practice can help maintain the plant’s health and productivity, ultimately allowing for a more abundant and longer-lasting harvest.
Experiments with this method yielded positive outcomes. When a single supermarket pot of basil was divided into four separate sections, three of these sections thrived, continuing to grow and produce fresh leaves over the following month. Such results suggest that giving basil plants more space can transform what is typically a short-lived kitchen herb into a sustainable source for cooking and home gardening.
