Netanyahu Criticizes UK, Labels It ‘Islamic Republic of Britain’

In a recent podcast interview with Israel’s army radio, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial remarks have sparked backlash from British officials and Israeli political figures alike. Netanyahu referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” and suggested it was the “first Islamic republic to get a nuclear weapon.” These comments have been criticized for perpetuating Islamophobic stereotypes concerning Britain’s Muslim population.

Netanyahu’s statements emerged during a discussion on the evolving political landscape in Britain. He had previously acknowledged favorable coverage of Israel by Randolph Churchill, the son of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, before making his contentious remarks about contemporary Britain. His comments have provoked a strong reaction, with critics pointing out that Pakistan, known officially as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has held nuclear capabilities since the 1990s.

Relations between Britain and Israel have been under strain, particularly in light of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the UK’s increasingly vocal criticism of Israeli policies. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that the UK may escalate pressure on Israel, potentially through additional sanctions or by imposing trade restrictions related to illegal settlements. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office condemned Netanyahu’s remarks as “completely unacceptable,” and confirmed that the issue has been addressed with the Israeli government.

Israeli opposition politician Avi Dabush also weighed in, accusing Netanyahu of undermining Israel’s relationship with an essential international ally when the nation faces mounting diplomatic isolation. Netanyahu’s comments have arisen amidst growing tensions between Israel and several Western countries over the ongoing Gaza conflict, as well as heightened debates in Britain regarding Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
