France and Germany Seek EU Trade Mechanism to Counter Market Distortions

by admin477351

France and Germany are advocating for a new trade mechanism that would enable the European Union (EU) to respond more swiftly to countries accused of creating unfair market conditions. This proposal, aimed at countering rising global trade tensions, suggests the EU needs to enhance and expedite its current trade-defense measures to protect its industrial base and safeguard jobs.

The joint initiative by the two nations highlights concerns over persistent market distortions such as dumping, extensive subsidies, and restrictions on currency convertibility. France and Germany are urging the EU to conduct broader investigations that encompass entire economic sectors to address these issues effectively.

In addition to strengthening existing measures, the two countries have proposed two new instruments to bolster the EU’s economic security. One aims to reduce European companies’ reliance on single suppliers for critical goods, while the other seeks to limit access to the EU single market for countries that undermine fair competition.

Under the proposal, the European Commission would have the authority to activate countermeasures more quickly, potentially within days, unless opposed by a qualified majority of EU member states. This rapid-response capability is seen as crucial in dealing with the evolving landscape of global trade disputes.

However, any new legislation arising from this proposal would still require approval from both EU governments and the European Parliament. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for the EU to adapt its trade policies to the current geopolitical environment and ensure fair competition in its markets.
