Macron Vows Firm Stand as EU-US Trade Deal Sparks Concern in France

by admin477351

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed dissatisfaction with the recently concluded EU-US trade agreement, declaring that the deal is “not the end of it” and signaling France’s intent to remain firm in upcoming negotiations. Macron criticized the European Union’s negotiation approach, stating that Europe must become a power that is “feared” to secure fair terms.

The trade deal, finalized just ahead of a looming deadline for harsh tariffs, sets a 15% tariff rate on most EU exports to the United States—higher than previous levels, but lower than the initially threatened 30%. Additionally, the EU has committed to purchase $750 billion worth of American liquefied natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel over three years and invest $600 billion more in the US economy.

While Macron acknowledged the difficult circumstances under which the deal was negotiated, he emphasized the importance of protecting core French and European industries, such as aviation. He also suggested that future discussions may bring new exemptions or adjustments beneficial to the EU.

French Finance Minister Éric Lombard echoed Macron’s sentiments, noting that the EU’s negotiation strategy lacked vigor and must be strengthened to assert its influence in global economic talks.
