Instagram is rolling out two of its most requested updates, signaling a major enhancement of its platform. The company is now officially testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels and has simultaneously launched a dedicated app for the iPad, addressing key user demands for multitasking and better device support.
The PiP feature brings a new level of flexibility to watching Reels. Soon, you may be able to keep a video playing in a small, movable window while you multitask on your phone. Whether you need to reply to a message or look something up online, your Reel won’t have to stop. This functionality is currently in a trial phase with a limited number of users, with a broader release anticipated if the tests are successful.
Beyond convenience, the PiP mode is poised to improve video metrics across the board, as viewers can stay engaged with content for longer without feeling confined to the app. For those who find the feature intrusive, Instagram has included a simple opt-out toggle within the video’s menu. This ensures that users remain in control of their viewing experience.
The launch of the native iPad app is another massive step forward. Previously, iPad users had to use a stretched-out version of the iPhone app. The new, optimized experience includes layouts designed for the tablet’s screen, a dedicated “Following” tab, and an overall smoother navigation system, making it a much more enjoyable platform for both consuming and creating content.
