Decades of US Interventions Cast Shadow Over Current Operation

by admin477351

The United States military operation in Venezuela must be understood within the context of more than two centuries of American military interventions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Brazil’s President Lula explicitly referenced this history in comparing Saturday’s strikes that captured President Nicolás Maduro to the darkest historical moments.

From the 19th century Mexican-American War through 20th century interventions in Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Chile, Grenada, Panama, and numerous other nations, the region has experienced repeated American military involvement. This historical legacy shapes how many Latin Americans interpret current events, regardless of the Trump administration’s stated justifications.

Progressive leaders across the region have emphasized concerns about reviving imperialist patterns, with Cuba’s president characterizing the operation as state terrorism. Colombia’s Petro, Mexico’s Sheinbaum, and Chile’s Boric have all warned that such actions undermine international law and create a world governed by violence rather than cooperation.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced that Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores will face drug trafficking charges in New York, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming the charges relate to narcotics operations. President Trump stated the couple is currently aboard a ship being transported to the United States for prosecution.

The international response has been characterized by widespread condemnation from major powers and international organizations, with UN Secretary General António Guterres warning of dangerous precedents. Right-wing governments have offered support while most nations criticized the operation, and Colombia has mobilized its armed forces in anticipation of refugee flows across its border.
