Vietnam’s pioneering VNREDSat-1 satellite program has established a solid groundwork for advancing collaboration with France in space technology, setting the stage for future ventures in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhancing domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, which was launched on May 7, 2013, as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, was handed over for operation in September of the same year. Remarkably, the satellite continues to function as of 2026, surpassing its planned five-year lifespan and marking 14 years in operation.
The initiative has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s growth in space technology expertise beyond merely operating satellites. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent comprehensive training both in France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training enabled them to address technical issues autonomously, transitioning from adhering strictly to transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. Vietnam has since developed an integrated remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests, satellite control, and data handling processes. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided close to 30,000 satellite images for various uses, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, and defense.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program laid a crucial technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. He noted, however, that achieving greater technological autonomy would necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, and ground systems. A new chapter in Vietnam-France cooperation began during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation.
The partners are now investigating the possibility of a next-generation Earth observation system and technological prospects for a proposed VNREDSat-2. Future cooperation is expected to highlight increased Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, and data applications. Areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and selected sensors and payloads are seen as opportunities for Vietnam to bolster its domestic expertise.
The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, allowing Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually advance future generations of satellite technology independently. This shift aims to empower Vietnam with the mastery needed for sustainable and self-reliant space technology development.
