Google Revives Glasses, Transforms Search with AI Update

In a significant move to enhance its search capabilities, Google has announced the integration of advanced artificial intelligence into its search bar, promising a more interactive and intuitive user experience. Revealed during the annual Google I/O conference, the update allows users to make longer, conversational queries, aligning more closely with natural language. This transformation is driven by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, which aims to improve search predictions and provide richer, more visual responses. The update, which goes live globally for both desktop and mobile versions, marks one of the most substantial changes in Google Search’s nearly 30-year history.

Elizabeth Reid, who is responsible for overseeing Google Search, emphasized the revolutionary nature of these updates, stating, “Google Search is AI search.” As part of these enhancements, users will now encounter AI-driven summaries and interactive options, such as creating calendar invites or spreadsheets directly from search results. Nonetheless, traditionalists can still opt for the classic list of links by selecting the “Web” tab. The shift to a more AI-centric search experience is a reflection of growing demand, with searches reaching record numbers last month, and AI-driven queries doubling each quarter since the introduction of the Gemini-powered chatbot interface.

The ambitious goal of Gemini, as described by Josh Woodward, the head of its development, is to serve as a “universal assistant that’s personal, proactive, persistent.” Currently, the app attracts 900 million monthly users, although it still trails behind ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users. Google’s expansion of AI functionalities within its search product seeks to broaden its appeal beyond tech enthusiasts to everyday consumers. Subscribers to AI Pro and Ultra plans will gain access to features such as “information agents,” which can conduct extensive research and generate summaries or action plans. Additionally, a “generative user interface” will allow for the creation of personalized visuals and dashboards based on user input.

In a throwback to its previous venture into eyewear, Google has also unveiled a new line of “intelligent eyewear,” developed in partnership with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. These smart glasses can respond to voice commands and capture photos or videos, echoing the functionality of Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses introduced in 2021. Google’s prior attempt with Google Glass in 2014 faced ridicule and was subsequently discontinued, but the market for augmented-reality glasses appears more promising today, with Meta positioning it as a future growth area. Google is also reportedly working on a second model of smart glasses featuring an in-lens display, known as Project Aura.
